10/07/2015 Social Studies Update: Voting/Government
In Social, we have been learning and studying elections. I found out that, last year, 39% of Canada didn't vote. Personally, I don't think it is because of pure laziness. I hope that this percentage of non-voters decreases this year, and in the future. We have had thousands, maybe millions of people fight for the right to vote and what do we do with it? Some of us say use it, but the others do nothing. They are wasting their chance to cast a ballot that could affect the rest of the country and their own life. I say ha to the people that have the chance to vote, but don't use it. By not voting, you may end up with a bad government or there may be a tie between two parties. Elections only come every minimum four years, they are important to the society of Canada. I have my own little quote too: “Voting is not only just to choose a government, it is to change the country. If you don't vote, possibly millions of inhabitants of the country may be affected.
11/23/15: Diversity:
Not too much has been going on lately with Social Studies. We, however, have been working on an assignment called “Cultural Diversity”. We had to create a flip book for a rough copy, containing sections like Traditions in my school, how some deal with cultural change and more. We then had to make a good copy with presentation apps like Prezi, PowerPoint, Google Slides, and others. I chose Google Slides. We are still working on them, but I am done. It think I did well. I just hope my teacher thinks the same as well.
12/01/15: New, Intriguing Dances
Yesterday, we learned about dances from different continents, including Antarctica. I learned about a dance from there called “The Happy Feet Dance”. Penguins do the dance instead of humans, considering that they are the only living inhabitants of Antarctica. It is also seen in the Happy Feet movies. We also learned about Egyptian Dances, Break Dance, the Kindergarten Square and more! We also are going to learn about special music, poems, foods, and literature. There is a large amount of cultural and religious versions of each of these subjects and we sometimes really, really enjoy having/doing.
12/09/15: Cultural Foods and songs,
Yesterday, we learned about food and songs from other cultures. The food I looked up is a French recipe, known as a French Baguette. My family has bought them from Safeway before, but homemade is usually better, so I'd like to try it. We've never made homemade baguettes before though. Might be very delicious. We then learned about songs. I learned about a Canadian folk song called “Farewell to Nova Scotia”. It is about a person that has to leave Nova Scotia. Kind of sad, but decent lyrics.
05/13/16: Power and Authority
I suppose I should do an update in social studies too. We are currently working on a topic called “Power and Authority”. It is about different positions and decisions. There are any forms of power. For example, there is a type of power called Force. It is when you use physical behavior to force somebody into doing something for you. Another is influence. This is when you tell somebody to do something kindly or anything the opposite of force. The next and final form is authority. This is when somebody gives you the right to make decisions, like the government does. We vote for them, therefore giving them our authority to make decisions on our behalf. Those really are the only forms of power for humans.
