10/08/2015 Science Update: The Four Biotic Kingdoms
Lately, our class has been learning about the four kingdoms of living things: the first one is the Sponge Kingdom, which is obviously made up of sponges. Who knew they were alive? The second one is the Plant Kingdom, which includes trees, flowers, grass, bushes and more! The third one is the Animal Kingdom which we belong in alongside rabbits, birds, cats, dogs, cows and probulary thousands more. The fourth and final one is the Fungi Kingdom. It is made up of mushrooms, edible and otherwise. The abiotic side meanwhile has all the dead things that never lived at all. I'm glad I'm not abiotic, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this at all!😄 The most recent thing I'be been learning about in Science is Vertebrates and Invertebrates. Vertebrates have backbones, while the invertebrates have, you know, no backbones. Everything must be a biotic thing or an abiotic thing.
10/28/15: Science Centre Field Trip Reflection
I was thinking it was going to be a good field trip, and it was! Personally, I enjoyed the Gallery of Light because of the fact that you could take a selfie with your own shadow. Also, the ball of Plasma in a glass orb was cool too. You could also get a rainbow-colored shadow in there as well. Another favourite was the house-repairing exhibit. I fixed the shingles on the roof and dealt with the brick pillars. One thing I learned was that when you mix -72°C ice pellets that can give you instant frostbite and boiling water, it creates a volcano of steam. When you add soap bubbles, it just got plain bigger and more fun! Also, I learnt that in action movies, alien goop is really flubber (not related to rubber), and that the fake blood they use is made of everyday materials like water, cornstarch, corn syrup, yellow and red food colouring, and more! The final thing I learned was that in movies they don't use real glass for windows that get smashed are made out of a substance called “Sugar Glass”. It doesn't have sharp corners and it breaks easily.
11/30/15: Bad Evaluator and a Whole New Unit:
Last week, we finished evaluating our big Vertebrate Classification Assignment. I wasn't marked very fairly though. Most of the people who evaluated me were okay, but one of them drastically lowered my marks, or tried to at least. He didn't succeed, thankfully, but it wasn't very nice what happened. Good news is we are moving onto a new unit in my favorite science subject: Space! The unit focuses on the Solar System. We haven't learned anything interesting yet. Yay, how does the sun rise and set! (Sarcasm) Hopefully, we will move on to learning about the actual solar system soon (Planets, The Sun, Comets, Asteroids, etc.) That will be interesting, I hope. Here's my favorite planet in picture form:
Behold... Planet Earth! Good thing we live on it!
12/08/15: No Science for a while, until now...
We haven't had science for a while and if it happens, it's boring! Get to the planets already! That topic of the solar system is way more interesting then learning about how the sun rises and sets every single day. It would be way more exciting if we learned about something other then boring topics. However, the next thing we learn about is time and who set the first clock. I just hope it isn't as boring as the previous topic...
We use the app called “ThingLink”. You can edit photos and share them. We use a specific image to show our learning on with videos and text. We also use a website known as “Mystery Science”. We use it learn about the six topics of the solar system: Sunset/Sunrise, Time, Planets, stars, and more!
05/11/16: Cassini, Saturn and An Assignment
Well, I am finally on the planets and guess what? I'm getting retaught everything I already know about planets. “Saturn has the biggest rings in the Solar System”, “Jupiter is the biggest planet”. I know that already! It's kind of frustrating. And then, when the teacher is about to get to the good stuff on the next page, we don't even get to learn. Instead, we do a big, unessessary assignment on any planet we choose. I learned all of this information before I started grade two! (And that is not a good thing when they teach you this info in grade six!) At least I learned something about space while I was researching for my project. Apparently, the satellite that is currently orbiting Saturn, Cassini, is going to do one final sweep of Saturn's inner rings and then they are going to send it into Saturn's own atmosphere, which is made out of some dangerous gases. They are doing this from May 2017 to September 2017. NASA might get some decent information from that experience.
